According to the Migraine Research Foundation, “Migraine is an extraordinarily common disease that affects 36 million men, women and children in the United States.”  One of of every four families will have someone who has suffered from a migraine.  Every 10 seconds, someone in the United States goes to the emergency room with a headache or migraine.

These are sobering statistics.  For those who have not experienced the debilitating effects of a Migraine in Chicago or beyond, they are unlike a typical headache.  The Mayo Clinic states “Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to days and be so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down.”

As a chronic migraine sufferer for years, I have tried all the typical prescription medications without success.  There are three types of migraine medication, preventive to prevent the onset of a migraine, abortive to stop the migraine in its tracks and rescue medication which is a nice name for prescription pain medication.  Unfortunately many migraine sufferers will tell you once you have a migraine, it is very difficult to get rid of it.

My home remedy works only if the migraine is caught in time.  I am not a fan of soda or high fructose corn syrup however when a migraine hits, all sense goes out the window.   Sometimes 2 advil and a can of regular Coca Cola and an ice pack on the back of the neck in a cold dark room might just do the trick.  Why it works sometimes and not others, who knows.  If you suffer from migraines, you might want to try this and see if it works for you.

I am Lynette Henk, migraine sufferer and Healthy Chocolate lover.  I was thrilled to find out I can eat Chocolate after all.  I had been told to avoid it because Chocolate can be a trigger for migraines.  What I found out is that it is not the chocolate that is the trigger but the processing of the chocolate that may be suspect.  I only eat cold pressed chocolate that has not been heated or dutched like traditional chocolate.  It does not have the waxes and filler like processed chocolate candy and thankfully does not cause me to have a migraine.
