Pinterest and I have become great friends recently. If you are not familiar with the Social Media Darling Pinterest, you REALLY should check it out. Pinterest lets you “pin” photos and recipes and ideas and so much more. On Pinterest I found out that I could easily make my own laundry detergent in The Villages that I am told works better than my current standby “Tide” which I have trusted through three boys growing up.
I was told that I could make enough detergent for 128 loads of laundry and that my cost would only be $1.76. Saving money is certainly a plus, but not having to lug heavy laundry jugs back and forth from the grocery store is a big deal. Another plus is that I would not have to worry when they run out of my favorite scent detergent in the store and I can have what I consider to be a healthier version of detergent.
Since I consider myself a big Naples crafter anyway, I figure why not. I now have everything I need to make this detergent and I will have to let you know how it works. Anyway, it seemed like a fun project to work on.Â
I found the recipe from Pinterest on a site called budget101. They call the detergent “Mom’s Super Laundry Sauce”. I think the name is quite catchy actually. I must use HE detergent in my washer but I am told I can use this Super Laundry Sauce in an HE washer as well as a traditional washer.
Recipe for 1/2 Gallon of concentrate
1 bar Fels Naptha soap
1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (Not baking soda)
4 cups of hot water & more water as needed
2 of the 1 quart size Mason Jars
Note to self. Must have cute labels to attach!
