Unfortunately I am one of the many suffering with Fibromyalgia. If you are not familiar with Fibromyalgia, think of the worst flu of your life that NEVER goes away. People with Fibromyalgia are often treated like they are lazy and just don’t want to do anything. What people don’t realize is that the pain these individuals feel is very real and fibro is a debilitating disease without a cure. Many individuals are unable to work or to have an active life. Life as they know it has changed drastically.
Friends disappear as they no longer understand why you are not reliable. It is impossible to plan or schedule a party or event, because when you do you may end up having to cancel because the pain is so severe. You may find that you are laying in bed in the fetal position in so much pain that you don’t know how you will make it another day.
This is the true feeling of Fibro. What I have learned in my over 10 years with this disease is that exercise is a necessary evil. I say evil because it is so painful to exercise sometimes yet that same exercise will help improve your symptoms. It is difficult but you must force yourself to stay active. Doing so keeps you from getting to the point that you cannot even leave your bed let alone your house.
Set small goals and exercise in 5 minute increments if you must. Work your way up to 20 minutes a day at least. This will help! Many enjoy yoga or pool exercise that is less stressful on the body for those who are suffering with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue. Others prefer to do stretching exercises in the comfort of their home. Others prefer Silver Sneakers classes that move at a slower pace.
The key is to realize how vital it is to keep moving. Even my rheumatologist explained that exercise is part of the puzzle. So no matter how bad you feel, stay active and keep ahead of the fibromyalgia. Anything you can do to avoid a relapse or flare is worth it.
