Why we should eat functional foods to stay healthy
Why is everyone talking about Functional foods to stay healthy these days? It is a priority to keep the immune system strong and to eat right, especially when a virus is making the rounds. I believe Functional foods may help which is why I stocked up for my family. Considering the current virus epidemic that made it’s appearance in the United States and Canada in 2020, we should all want to focus on a strong immune system. I am doing everything I can to stay healthy during respiratory diseases like the current corona virus. Functional foods are one of those important areas that are vital for good health so I choose to eat and shop for functional foods.
What the Mayo Clinic has to say about functional foods
“Functional foods are foods that have a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition. Proponents of functional foods say they promote optimal health and help reduce the risk of disease.”
So what are functional foods anyway?
Generally fruits and vegetables as well as wild fish and fermented foods are considered a functional food. Forbes magazine had this to say about Functional foods,
“Finally, yes, chocolate is considered a functional food, as the cocoa in chocolate contains flavonoids, which boost endorphin and serotonin levels. It also has a similar effect as a low dose of aspirin by thinning the blood. Dark chocolate contains more flavonoids compared to milk chocolate. “
Realistically it can be difficult to constantly eat functional foods to stay healthy as we work and play during our day. I personally struggled with eating enough functional foods until a friend shared healthy chocolate with me. I don’t have a desire to eat numerous salads every day however I have found that keeping chocolate in my purse and eating it throughout the day is not hard at all for me. In fact, I even have a XeTRM stick pack in my purse that I can mix with water that has the cocoa flavonoids mentioned by Forbes magazine.
Stocking Up and Planning Ahead for a pandemic
In case I would need to self quarantine due to infection pandemic or respiratory disease, this is what I will do. I have been stocking up on stable functional foods like the beyond chocolate protein shake that makes a meal by mixing with water. There are many functional foods to help us stay healthy that are available for purchase. We don’t know if we need to be concerned or not but we prepare for hurricane season anyway so we decided to stock up. Plus the CDC says we need to stay home when we are sick so it makes sense to prepare.
How I Stock Up For An Emergency
Stocking up on protein shake, XeTRM energy drink stick packs and healthy chocolate made sense to me. We like to use a Berkey filter to filter water at our house. I would purchase bottled water if I did not have a system. I told my parents to stock up on their current prescription medications at the pharmacy. It is important to have enough food to get buy for a few weeks. I know that we can all power through this 2020 pandemic but we need to do our part to stay healthy. As always, follow the guidelines of the CDC.
